Tearing at the Roots of White Supremacy :: Desgarrando las raíces de la supremacía blanca

On Wednesday, we witnessed what white supremacy has sown in this country, as well as the fruits of Black-led organizing. We saw the incredible power of organizers in Georgia which determined control of the Senate. And we saw armed white vigilantes launch an attack on our democracy in our nation’s capital.

After a coordinated disinformation campaign that failed to overturn a democratic election, we’re not surprised that, in a country founded on white supremacy, some people were willing to attempt an insurrection to defend it. Nor are we surprised that law enforcement, when they were not actively abetting the riot, showed unusual restraint towards the white mob during the attack.

And yet, even though we know the answer, we can’t help but imagine, what if it had been us? And in imagining, we remember not only the batons, violence against Black bodies, and the tear gas, but also the joyous affirmation of life that animates our movements and our protest. When we take to the streets, we do it for justice, liberation, and for the love of our communities.

And so, we take care of each other and love on our people. We organize. We experiment with radical democracy at the grassroots.

We will demand accountability for those who stoke the flames of white supremacy, who incited this violence and for the police who stood by. We will demand that this attack not be used to justify the expansion of surveillance in our communities or to restrict our right to protest injustice. We know that you can’t defend democracy without defunding the police.

We will hold the incoming senate and administration accountable for responding to this crisis. We won’t allow our dreams to be limited to a return to normal. The roots of normal are rotten. We will tear them out with our teeth and plant something new.
