Just a few weeks left before we celebrate five years at Causa Justa and 30 years of history at our anniversary event, Powerful Together, ¡Pa’lante! Our event takes place May 28th at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, 6-9pm 388 9th St. #290 in Oakland.

We’re excited to tell you that our keynote speaker is none other than W. Kamau Bell!
— a Bay Area native, anti-racist comedian, political satirist, and star of FXX’s Totally Biased. The show was nominated for a 2013 GLAAD Award for “Outstanding Talk Show Episode” for Kamau’s interview with Orange Is the New Black’s Laverne Cox, as well as “Best Talk Series” at the 2012 NAACP Image Awards. Kamau was voted San Francisco’s best comedian by the SF Weekly, the SF Bay Guardian, and 7×7 Magazine.

Alicia Garza, co-founder of Black Lives Matter and Special Projects Director of National Domestic Workers Alliance, will electrify the stage as our MC.
 
You’ll be blown away by Oaklander Jennifer Johns, who carries a sound sure to stir your soul and inspire your mind. Her singing has been described as “horns before the battle, your spirits amplifier,” blending rhythms from the African Diaspora. Jennifer has opened for Lauryn Hill, The Black Eyed Peas, Mos Def, Ziggy Marley, Bebel Gilberto, Gil Scott Heron and Common.

As gentrification restructures our Bay Area neighborhoods in the interest of profit, poor and working class communities of color not only bear the brunt of racialized displacement, we also have the potential to be the protagonists of the change our whole region needs. So you will be inspired by dynamic Gentrification Stops Here storytelling exhibit and performance by 12 CJJC member organizers —  a collaboration with local artist/activist Paul Flores and the California Shakespeare Theater.

If that weren’t enough there will be beats by DJ BAAGI, Rhythms of Solidarity.

And… a special closing performance by TARIMBA! Tarimba performs traditional and soulful Son Jarocho music/dance from Veracruz, Mexico.  
 
After our second merger, with People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER), we are more powerful and politically clear than ever. We are building the power of Black and Brown grassroots leadership to fight the deeply racialized economic inequality that gentrification perpetuates.

As a united force, we are making bigger strides to ensure development without displacement in our neighborhoods, with working-class families, seniors, and youth most impacted leading that change, locally and globally. This is an important moment in CJJC’s history to celebrate, with all of you who are part of our movement family.  Join us May 28th!

Mientras el aburguesamiento reestructura nuestros barrios del área de la Bahía según los intereses de las ganancias, las comunidades pobres y de clase trabajadora de color no solo tienen que aguantar lo más duro del desplazamiento racial, sino que ¡tienen el potencial para ser los protagonistas del cambio que toda la región necesita!

Luego de nuestra segunda fusión con People Organized to Win Employment Rights, POWER, (Personas organizadas para ganar los derechos de empleo), estamos más fortalecidos y más claros políticamente que nunca.

Estamos construyendo el poder de los líderes de base de las comunidades afrodescendientes y latinas para luchar contra la inequidad económica profundamente racista que perpetúa el aburguesamiento.

Como fuerza unida, estamos realizando grandes avances para asegurar el desarrollo sin el desplazamiento en nuestros barrios, con el liderazgo local y global de las familias de clase trabajadora, ancianos y jóvenes que más sufren el impacto.
