Dear Friends and Family,
With great love, I am writing to share that after 15 years on staff, I will be transitioning out of my role as Executive Director at Causa Justa :: Just Cause on May 1st. Through mergers, evolutions in our work and shifting political terrain, I am honored to have helped build Causa Justa into the powerful movement vehicle it is today. It has been one of the greatest gifts of my life to grow within this political project. As the world enters a new moment of transition, there are new (and old) challenges and possibilities for our movement opening all around us. With deep trust and excitement, I take this step knowing that both the organization and I are at a point where something new is called for and coming.
Over the past year, we have promoted and hired strong leadership and engaged staff, membership and allies in reimagining our work. In the next few weeks, we will be sharing more about the latest iteration of our work and the staff roles we will be looking to fill, including the process being undertaken to fill my position. I couldn’t be more excited for the ways this next phase and next generation of leadership position CJJC to meet the new moment with even greater strength and impact.
In 2006, I joined Just Cause Oakland (JCO) as the fourth staff person and sole organizer. JCO was embarking on a new phase and engaging big questions about our strategic role in the fight against gentrification. Over those first years, we took on our first budget fight, helped form Oakland Rising and temporarily reclaimed a foreclosed house in West Oakland. It was the praxis of these early years that informed our commitment to Black and Brown Unity and our decision to unite with Saint Peters Housing Committee, and eventually with POWER, to form CJJC.
Looking back at my time at CJJC, I am so proud to have been part of building an organization that is:
capable of advancing bold vision while staying grounded in the day-to-day struggle with our people to make what is currently impossible possible. Together, we have weathered great changes in our communities and I have helped build infrastructure for basebuilding that can grow in scale without sacrificing depth.
deeply committed to movement building and developing the infrastructure our movements need to effectively contest for power, engage beyond our base and intervene during ruptures to change the course of history. There is a role for each and every one of us to play in winning and building a new society. New vehicles that I’ve helped form and lead, like the Rising electoral formations and Bay Resistance, are both getting us there and preparing us to be capable of creating that society together.
clear about the role Black liberation plays in liberation for all. CJJC has continued JCO’s & POWER’s legacies of explicitly talking about racial justice and the strategic necessity of organizing working class Black people. I’m honored to have contributed to leadership development and institution building work that directly confronts larger movement questions about how we grow and sustain Black leadership. For the leadership we need, there are no shortcuts. We must invest in the long-term and hard work of basebuilding and shifting the structural and material conditions that tear at our capacity to survive and to organize as Black people.
Causa Justa gave me a place to fight for a future that my child deserves. Come May, I will take time to reflect on all that I have learned organizing at CJJC for the last 15 years. The movement is my home, and this space will help me to figure out the best contribution I can make next. Whatever I do, it will be based on all that has been invested in me and all that I’ve learned to love and believe in at this organization. In some way or another, it will have CJJC written all over it. And I know CJJC will have a little of me written on it as well.

Hacia el Crecimiento y con Gratitud: Anunciando mi transición de Causa Justa :: Just Cause
Con mucho amor, les escribo para compartirles que después de 15 años en el personal, dejaré mi rol como Directora Ejecutiva de Causa Justa :: Just Cause el 1 de mayo. A través de fusiones, evoluciones en nuestro trabajo y un terreno político cambiante, me siento honrada de haber ayudado a convertir a Causa Justa en el poderoso vehículo de movimiento que es hoy. Crecer dentro de este proyecto político ha sido uno de los mayores regalos de mi vida. Conforme el mundo entra en un nuevo momento de transición, hay nuevos (y viejos) desafíos y posibilidades para nuestro movimiento que se abren a nuestro alrededor. Con profunda confianza y entusiasmo, doy este paso sabiendo que tanto la organización como yo estamos en un punto en el que se necesita y se avecina algo nuevo.
Durante el año pasado, hemos promovido y contratado un liderazgo sólido y un personal dedicado, miembros y aliados en la reinvención de nuestro trabajo. En las próximas semanas, compartiremos más sobre la última versión de nuestro trabajo así como las posiciones del personal que necesitaremos cubrir, incluyendo el proceso que se está llevando a cabo para ocupar mi puesto. No podría estar más emocionada por las formas en que esta próxima etapa y la próxima generación posicionarán a CJJC para enfrentar el nuevo momento con una fuerza e impacto aún mayores.

Causa Justa me dio un lugar para luchar por un futuro que mi hijo se merece. En mayo, me tomaré un tiempo para reflexionar sobre todo lo que he aprendido organizando en CJJC durante los últimos 15 años. El movimiento es mi hogar, y este espacio me ayudará a descubrir cuál es la mejor contribución que puedo hacer a continuación. Haga lo que haga, se basará en todo lo que se ha invertido en mí y en todo lo que he aprendido a amar y a creer en esta organización. De una forma u otra, tendrá a CJJC escrito por todas partes. Y sé que CJJC también tendrá escrito un poco de mí.
